Abstract

Nanhaipotamon hongkongense (Shen, 1940) is a tropical freshwater crab currently considered endemic to Hong Kong.  The species is more widely distributed in Hong Kong than previously published photographic records from Guangdong Province require further survey and corroboration; these would be the first records of this species outside of Hong Kong.  Nanhaipotamon hongkongense prefers terrestrial environs in close proximity to clean watercourses shaded by secondary woodland, and records from this study indicate it is also found at lower elevations than previously published.  The habitats of this semi-aquatic species are under threat due to development.  It is hoped that understanding of the species’ distribution will aid in its conservation and encourage further study of this species and its habitat uses.
