Abstract: The present study aimed to
determine the plant species richness of an urban green space — the Radhabai
Kale Mahila Mahavidyalaya campus in Ahilyanagar, Maharashtra. A total of 325
plant species (including five infraspecific taxa) from 255 genera and 81
families were documented. The dominant plant families were Fabaceae (24
species), Asteraceae (22), Euphorbiaceae (19), Apocynaceae (18), Asparagaceae
(15), and Poaceae (14). In addition to the 314 angiosperms species, the study
also recorded eight gymnosperms species, and three pteridophytes species. The
majority of the recorded plants were planted for academic purposes,
contributing to the green space and biodiversity of the college. These plants
have various uses: many are ornamental, some have medicinal or edible
properties.

Introduction
Ahilyanagar (formerly known as
Ahmednagar) is a district located in the state of Maharashtra, India. It is
located in the north-central part of the state. The district covers an area of
around 17,048 km2, making it one of the largest districts in
Maharashtra. It has a varied landscape and vegetation, influenced by the
semi-arid climate, geography, and seasonal rainfall. The region is
characterized by a mix of dry deciduous forests, grasslands, and cultivated
land. It experiences a semi-arid climate, with hot summers, a moderate monsoon,
and mild winters. The average rainfall in the region ranges from 450–800 mm
annually, primarily during the monsoon season (June–September). The dry
conditions influence the type of vegetation found in the area.
With increasing urbanisation,
there is an expansion of infrastructure, buildings, and roads. This has a
significant impact on the environment, including vegetation. It also leads to
the loss of natural habitats, resulting in the decline of native vegetation and
the destruction of wildlife habitats. Increased pollution levels also have a
negative effect on plant health. This leads to changes in plant phenology.
Urbanisation has profound and often negative impacts on vegetation, but these
impacts can be mitigated through thoughtful planning and conservation
strategies. Efforts to preserve natural habitats, promote biodiversity, and
reduce pollution can help protect and restore vegetation in urban areas. In
recent years, studies focusing on urban ecology have developed rapidly (Celesti
2006). Many researchers have studied the flora of college campuses (Sanyal
& Chattopadhyay 2014; Nerlekar et al. 2016; Khan et al. 2019; Dar 2020;
Kadam et al. 2020; Naik 2020). Aher (2015) studied the floristic diversity of
Parner Tahsil in Ahilyanagar. It was reported that there were 410 taxa
belonging to 295 genera and 91 families, which indictaes the rich biodiversity
of the Tahsil. The flora of the Radhabai Kale Mahila Mahavidyalaya campus has
not been documented so far. Such documentation is essential for understanding
the plant diversity of this urban green space and for providing baseline
information for future ecological studies and conservation.
In cities, urban green spaces are
of great importance because of the multiple ecosystem services they provide
(Nehru et al. 2012). Radhabai Kale Mahila Mahavidyalaya (RKMM) is one such
green space located in Ahilyanagar City. Therefore, the present study was
undertaken to document the plant species occurring on the campus, assess their
taxonomic diversity, record their native/non-native status and uses, and
provide baseline information for future documentation and conservation of the
college campus flora.
Material
and methods
Study site
Radhabai Kale Mahila
Mahavidyalaya is a private urban-based government-aided educational institution
established in 1989. The college is located in the city of Ahilyanagar,
Maharashtra, India (19.104° N, 74.741° E) and is spread over 6.866 ac of land
(Image 1).
Data collection
Frequent visits and surveys were
undertaken in different seasons from January 2024–December 2024. The entire college campus, including the
botanical garden, was surveyed and studied to record the different plant species.
Plants were photographed with the help of a Vivo V21e 5G mobile phone (Images
3,4). The specimens were also collected to prepare herbarium specimens
representing different families. These specimens are deposited in the herbarium
of the Department of Botany, RKMM. Plants were identified using pertinent
literature, viz., Cooke (1958); Pradhan & Singh (1999). Ornamental plants
were identified using Bailey (1924). Nomenclature of the species was confirmed
using online databases such as International Plant Names Index (IPNI), Plants
of the World Online (POWO), and Tropicos.org. The angiosperm families in the
present study have been arranged according to APG IV (2016). The genera and
species are arranged alphabetically. A total of 325 species with their accepted
names are listed in Table 1.
Result
and Discussions
During the present study, a total
of 325 species, including five infraspecific taxa belonging to 255 genera and
81 families, have been recorded. In the clade monocots, the families
Asparagaceae Juss. and Poaceae Barnhart are dominant. Families such as Fabaceae
Lindl., Asteraceae Bercht. & J. Presl, Euphorbiaceae Juss. and Apocynaceae
Juss. are dominant in the clade Eudicots. Fabaceae is the dominant family with
24 species, followed by Asteraceae Bercht. & J.Presl (22), Euphorbiaceae
Juss. (19), Apocynaceae Juss. (18), Asparagaceae Juss. (15) and Poaceae
Barnhart (14) (Image 2).
As part of this total flora,
non-angiosperm groups of plants such as pteridophytes and gymnosperms were also
recorded from the campus. Eight species of gymnosperms belonging to seven
genera and four families were recorded. Three species of pteridophytes
belonging to three genera and two families were recorded.
Out of the total 325 species
recorded, 142 species were native to India, whereas 183 species were non-native
(POWO). Most of the plants recorded during the investigation are planted with a
view of landscaping and academic purposes. The recorded plants show a wide
range of utility; they include ornamental, medicinal, and edible species. In
addition to the cultivated species, 76 species of weeds were also recorded
during the present study. The college harbours a wide range of angiosperms,
which adds to the green space of the city. The botanical garden contributes to
the green cover of the college.
Conclusion
This study records 325 species of
flowering plants within the college campus which highlights the noteworthy
floristic diversity existing in this semi-urban environment. Such species
richness highlights the role of a college campus as a repository of regional
biodiversity. Furthermore, the recorded plant diversity provides a baseline for
future ecological monitoring, enabling assessments of floristic changes in
response to anthropogenic pressures and climatic variability. Other than its
ecological significance, the campus flora serves as a living laboratory for the
students of life sciences. This provides an opportunity for education,
interdisciplinary research, and creating an awareness regarding the environment
among the students. Thus, this study highlights the necessity of preserving
plant diversity as an integral component of urban biodiversity conservation
policy.
