Dedicated to the great memory of my fatherly friend, guide and well wisher, late Prof. Roger D. Goos, who triggered my interest while working on fungi of Idukki.  This work is devoted to his memory.  I worked with him for more than a decade and published my data in Mycotaxon, but never had the chance or the opportunity to meet him.  My respectful regards to him.

Preface

It is my pleasure to present this work.  In reality, this work comprises the contents of my publications from 1–390 (save the subsequent ones). I started my career with fungi of Western Ghats in Satara, Maharashtra, during the year 1974 under the guidance of Dr. P.B. Chavan, which ‘sowed the seed of fungus’ in me. This seed started growing as a tree during the years 1981–1996 under the guidance of eminent personalities of Botanical Survey of India, Southern Circle, Coimbatore.  All these works are based on the Western Ghats fungi, but a few are from cooling towers, Eastern Ghats, northeastern India and Andaman Islands. The work includes the fungi from Satara in Maharashtra; Nilgiris, Anamalai, Seithur Hills, Godheyar, etc. from Tamil Nadu; mainly from Kodagu in Karnataka; most of the places in the Western Ghats of Kerala State have been covered. This is the outcome of the result of the individual publications resulted in district-wise or forest-wise inventories and the compilation of all these are the out come of the present work. My work presented here should be supplemented with works by other fungal experts in India to know the exact number of fungi from the Western Ghats.

Abstract: This work is mainly based on the Western Ghats fungi but very a are from coolingtowers, Eastern Ghats, northeastern India and Andaman Islands. The work includes the fungi from Satara in Maharashtra; Nilgiris, Anamalai, Seithur hills, Godheyar, etc. from Tamil Nadu; mainly from Kodagu in Karnataka; most of the places in the Western Ghats of Kerala state have been covered. Since my work is distributed in 391 reprints (save the subsequent ones), an effort has been made here to bring all the taxa and information in one place. It comprises 6059 entries from the reprints giving an account of 2084 fungal taxa belonging to 259 genera on 2969 hosts/substrates. This is presented here as: Introduction, List of publications, Entries from the reprints, List of fungi, Fungal genera, Host/Substratum-fungus Index and Host Plants.

Introduction

The Indian subcontinent has rich biological diversity in the world owing to its vast geographic area, varied topography and climate; it is classified into 10 biogeographic regions.  Among the 34 hotspots of the world, two are mainly found in India extending into neighboring countries - the Western Ghats/Sri Lanka and the eastern Himalaya.

The Western Ghats are a chain of highlands running along the western coast of India, from the Vindhya-Satpura ranges in the north to the southern tip, traversing through Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu states.  These hills reach up to a height of 2800m before they merge to the east with the Deccan Plateau at an altitude of 500–600 m.  The average width of this mountain range is about 100km covering an area of 159,000km2 and it is an area of exceptional biological diversity and conservation interest.

The Western Ghats comprise the mountain range that runs the ecosystems of the Western Ghats are located mainly in the following regions: the tropical wet evergreen forests in Amboli and Radhanagari; the montane evergreen forests in Mahabaleshwar and Bhimashanker; moist deciduous forests in Mulsi and the scrub forest in Mundanthurai.  There are two main centres of diversity, the Agashyamalai Hills and the Silent Valley.  The complex topography and the heavy rainfall have made certain areas inaccessible and have helped the region to retain its diversity. There are currently seven national parks in the Western Ghats with a total area of 2,073km2 (equivalent to 1.3% of the region) and 39 wildlife sanctuaries covering an area of about 13,862km2(8.1%).  Of about 1.7 million species globally described and recorded in scientific literature, India has about 1,26,200 species.  It ranks tenth in the world both in respect of richness of flowering plants (17,000 species) and mammals (372 species). Of India’s 49,219 plant species, 1600 endemics (40% of the total number of endemics) are found in a 17,000km2 strip of forest along the seaward side of the Western Ghats in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala.

We know more about large, economically important plants and animals than we do about fungi and bacteria, despite their important ecological roles.  Microorganisms have had a tremendous influence on the availability of nutrients in soil through their weathering of rocks and on the composition of the earth’s atmosphere, especially the increase in greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane.  The microbial diversity is getting degraded in the forests due to forest fragmentation, loss of host plants due to felling of trees, air pollutants, fungicides and alteration in the microclimates, changes in the frequency of rainfall, droughts and over-exploitation of edible fungi. The forest fragmentation leads to extinction of symbiotic microbes that are host-specific and have poor dispersal abilities.  Each year, hundreds of species are being lost even before they are known to the scientific world due to their habitat destruction.  Hence, we should facilitate inventory and monitoring programmes to detect, identify and protect the microbial diversity.

Since beginning of the study of fungi in India, both macro and micro fungi have been collected from the Western Ghats from all the ecosystems.  However, none of the works are thorough to state the exact number of fungi from any part of the Western Ghats.  One can not be blamed because the diversity is so vast that it needs a group or team of experts to study the individual sanctuary, national park or any protected area continuously.  Since there is degradation of forests every year, there is habit and habitat loss resulting in enormous loss of fungal diversity before we know them.  And since for every work, needs a base to start, the present work starts in this direction by providing the list of fungi published by me.

The main and very purpose of this review is to bring out the taxonomic contents of my work in one place, which contains mainly foliicolous fungi of Western Ghats in addition to a few cooling tower fungi, fungi of Andaman Islands and very few from other areas. This can be used as a base.  If other works are added, one can bring out the total fungal diversity of Western Ghats.  In the present work, I have considered my following publications including 11 books and manuals, one data base and 391 publications in various national and international research journals.

This review comprises 6059 entries from the reprints giving an account of 2084 fungal taxa belonging to 259 genera on 2969 hosts/substrates.  This is presented here as: Introduction, list of publications, entries from the reprints, list of fungi, fungal genera and host/substratum-fungus Index.
