Ichthyofaunal diversity of two beels of Goalpara District, Assam, India

Abstract

Wetlands, known as beels in Assam, harbour rich fish fauna. Documentation of fish fauna in two beels of Goalpara district, Assam has been taken up for the first time (2005-2007). So far a total of 59 species belonging to 40 genera, 20 families and 8 orders have been recorded and listed in this paper. Of the collected species 17 were lotic species and 42 were lentic habitat fishes. These fishes are categorized into 13 vulnerable, 5 endangered and 1 critically endangered species (CAMP 1998). The two beels Sidli and Seksekia are fed by a channel from the river Brahmaputra.
